The origins of TikTok trace back to 2014; it all started with an app called, where people had the ability to lip-synching and dance to music. was very popular amongst the younger demographic of 12-18-year-olds. In 2017, was bought by a Chinese rival company, Tiktok. Both apps merged under the name of TikTok, becoming the most popular app of 2018-2020.

Since it became the #1 downloaded app in 2018, TikTok has had a consistent monthly follower growth of 500 million. What makes this app so unique?

First, it’s loved by celebrities. Celebrity endorsement is a marketing strategy that has helped the app expand its audience geographically. In the U.S., we’ve seen contemporary popular celebrities and forgotten childhood favorite stars. The significant part about TikTok is it allows you to discover, connect, and reach diverse audiences.

Second, TikTok provides personalized content. TikTok uses an algorithm that serves users post they think you will engage with. For example, if you are very into farms and engage with farm content on your “For You” page you will see a variety of farm-related topics. Pretty cool right?

Third, Tiktok offers easy content creation. That’s right, you can easily make videos, add custom sounds, and effects. This is what makes the app extremely popular, it allows everyday people to find creativity in any setting. From home, work, to messing around with kids, there’s no doubt TilkTok is entertaining. What’s the future TikTok?

Let’s face it, there’s no guarantee TikTok will be around forever like major social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In order to stay relevant, TikTok will need to keep innovating their current practices to stay on top of the game.
